The propagation was not good because of high geomagnetic activity started on December 5 due to a solar wind stream. That was a real problem to get west coast and DX stations as well. I can compare the contest to the last year one when I easily did good result with Low Power and the propagation was really nice. So I switched from LP to HP. Unfortunately I can't work all the up time. I missed at least 12 hours for some reasons.
I heard a plenty of VE2. Thanks for handshaking to Daniel - VE2SB, Alexej - VE2XAA, Gilles - VE2TZT, Mel - VE2DC, Claude - VE2FK, Claudio - VE2DWA, Serge - VE2AWR, Serge VE2HLS and others. (VE2OJ, VE2KRM).
Waiting for VE2TZT report. He has exceptional set up for the Top Band I can't even compare with my modest "junk-wire".))))

It would be nice to mention Time ON: when we report to the web. JP it's about time you upgrade your N1MM version 5.7, we are at 8.12.3 now hi.

Je partage les remarques de Victor, VA2WDQ, au sujet des conditions, bien moins bonnes que l'année dernière. Pourtant, cela ne semble pas avoir été le cas des stations plus au Sud, y compris en Ontario, qui elles ont augmenté leurs scores.
Cela fait plaisir d'entendre autant de VE2 (et VA2) sur la Top band, il semblerait qu'il y ait un engouement. Merci donc à VE2 AWR, DC, DWA, EZD,FK, HLS, SB, XAA et VA2 SG, WDQ. Il y avait aussi des non membres : VE2 AM et OJ (multi op) ainsi que VA2LGQ.
Concernant la station, cette fois-ci, j'ai vraiment pu utiliser le K3 à 100%, avec tous les filtres et le 2eme récepteur. Pour l'occasion, j'avais installé 2 beverages redondantes pour tester la réception en diversité. Celà vaut le déplacement... Cependant, quand le signal devient limite, il est plus facile de se concentrer sur une seule antenne. Pour la petite histoire, une des beverages redondantes était une simple longueur de 80m de RG6 (j'utilise la gaine, pas spécialement le conducteur central) posée à même le sol, sans piquet à l'extrémité distante (de façon à la rendre bi-directionnelle) et même pas tendue, ni spécialement en parfaite ligne droite. Pourtant, la réception était très acceptable comparativement aux autres ( à bon entendeur, salut...). J'utilise du RG6 ou du RG59 comme fil d'antenne, car il est de plus gros diamètre (en utilisant la gaine), et bien moins cher que le fil électrique (moins de $90 les 300 m contre près de $200 pour le #14) le seul inconvénient est que la gaine qui est en aluminium ne peut être soudée.
Autre innovation, le SO2R avance, et j'ai pu passer beaucoup de temps en quasi-SO2R durant ce contest (je n'ai pas encore terminé le passage en émission automatique sur la radio 2, ce qui la rend peu utilisable en TX). l'astuce pour faire du SO2R intra-bande sur 160m ayant juste consisté à installer, pour la réception, une beverage ( une 3eme) éloignée d'environ 150m, tournant le dos à l'antenne d'émission et utilisant le relief pour faire écran. J'ai donc disposé le long de la jetée au bord du lac un fil de 80m, à même les rochers de la jetée, les piquets de terre aux extrémités étant remplacés par des électrodes constituées d'un bout de tuyau de cuivre de 50 cm jetés dans le lac... Le seul problème a été la récupération in-extremis, ce soir, dans la nuit, de tous ça qui commençait à être pris dans la glace avec la chute rapide de la température et les vagues soulevées par le vent. Le fil sur les rochers de la jetée étant plus bas que le niveau du sol (environ 50cm au dessus de l'eau pour une jetée de 2m de haut), le sol faisait un écran naturel à l'antenne d'émission. Résultat, une réception très peu perturbée, sauf à moins de 3kHz de l'émission, ce qui est cohérent avec le roofing-filter du FT1000. Pour autant, ce dispositif m'a permis de m'occuper pendant les long CQ sans réponses, de limiter le temps de S&P et donc de ne rater aucun participant ``non runner``, de voir ce que faisait les autres compétiteurs, mais ne m'a permis aucun multi que je n'ai fait en run.
Ce score aurrait surement pu être amélioré de un ou 2 multis et d'environ 50 qso, mais au prix de 3 heures supplémentaires dimanche matin entre 5H et 8H, compte tenu des conditions, je ne pense pas que cela valait l'effort en terme de différence dans les résultats finaux.

Started half an hour late for a last fix (but is it important to start just at the first minute in a 42h contest where the number of participants is very limited?). I found the conditions difficult this year, the band was very noisy, especially the second night. Even with a slightly improved receiving beverage system and station from last year, I was not able to manage out the same number of QSO and mults than last year. I even missed VE6 and was only able to contact one VE7... For the first time, I was obliged to NIL several qso’s that I was not able to complete, the caller definitively disappearing in noise and qsb . Perhaps the location is too magnetically Northern for some competitiveness : I often heard some not so far, but more Southern competitors, working EU stations that I could not even guess. So, considering the conditions and thinking that this will not make the difference, I decided, after several breaks which were becoming longer and longer, to stop the contest at 9H50 UTC (4H50 local) on Sunday. I think that, considering the number of participants, this contest could have a 24h format. And I find those 10 qso/h last hours pitiful. The positive thing about conditions was that I had no any storm crash for the whole contest. The K3 in diversity RX was a great experience, you can read the descriptions of others about those fast moving signals from one ear to other, but you cannot really imagine what a great experience it is without a try. The move from a mono signal to a real stereo (not artificially re-created) one, propels you into a magic world, just like the difference between 2D and 3D movies.

Re:ARRL 160 CW - 2008/12/08 08:43Bravo Gilles. Voilà un gars qui prends le TopBand au sérieux. En tout cas, t'étais facile à trouver sur la bande avec la force de ton signal. De mon coté j'en suis qu'à mes débuts, j'espère avoir une Inverted-L pour le concours de Janvier mais le gros changement sera l'an prochain avec j'ajout de la deuxième tour plus loin dans le bois. Chose encourageante, j'entendais du DX répondre aux USA tandis qu'eux n'entendaient rien...

Comments: Very part-time operation less than 8 hours, but I'm very happy with my score.
Friday evening I was repairing the L antenna broken during during CQ WW CW, but working outside with a temperature of -20 Celsius wasn't an easy task, spent more than two hours working in the night therefore start the contest almost three hours later.
Saturday I drove to Montreal returning late in the evening found the band full of signals but noisy, it was snowing, near midnight trying to work a station around 1900KHz, because of high SWR, one end of the inverted vee got fire, wire burned and the antenna broken, I went outside again and under a heavy snow I've repaired the antenna, I cut the wire a little shorter to work high end of the band. Few more QSOs and time to sleep, I was exhausted; Sunday morning some more QSOs to finish around brunch.
Very happy on work my friend Jorge CX6VM Saturday before my sunrise, but a couple of hours after his sunrise, ON4WW was the loudest EU signal, ON4UN the EU longest time station copied, Sunday morning very surprise on copying a JH3 station answering many CQs from people that don't copy him, I've started to call CQ myself but he never answer me .
Lots of activity from VE2, I've worked VE2FK, VE2TZT, VE2AWR, VA2SG, VA2WDQ, VE2OJ. Hear VE2XAA, but I haven't worked him, CGQ is doing a great job getting more QC stations active in contest.
Lot of fun, I'm becoming a top band adict for sure.
