Re:ARRL DX SSB 2013 - 2013/03/04 11:25Bonjour/Hi,
Well here is our score:

As Victor mentioned the bands were up and down due to magnetic storm Friday. We were all waiting for VK, ZL sunrise opening Sunday on 80m but nothing much happened. Had a nice run on 10m on Sunday and worked an Italian with 1 watt. Also worked a JA with 5 watts on 15m. 40m was overloaded with the US big guns and the TX5K pileups did not help the situation.
Had major bad luck with the TH7 yagi. Everything worked fine Thursday but when I came home Friday and fired up the station, SWR was very high and fluctuating badly on 15m and 20m. Spent most of the night checking connectors and cables. Only when the team arrived Saturday morning they told me they were hearing my voice outside and sparks were coming from the antenna! Well I had a 15m trap failure. We had to constantly keep retuning to not damage the linear but this really affected our QSO rate. Thank goodness for an excellent amplifier which took all the punishment at full power without damage. Even with the yagi sparking the signals were getting out on 15m and 20m. You can see the black carbonized traps from the ground. Must have been all the wet snow which had started all the trouble. I did not suspect the antenna at all since it is not even 5 years old and I never had trouble with it. The work will be waiting for me in springtime. Lesson learned? No more trap antennas!!

Re:ARRL DX SSB 2013 - 2013/03/04 20:56Beau travail Réjean well as your group, George.
George, a trouble free 3 bander (without traps) is very expenive. Few companies produce. A Hy-gain trap is +/- 50$.

Re:ARRL DX SSB 2013 - 2013/03/04 21:18Bravo Rejean for your score! We were very close but you had the multi's.
Dany, I found traps at MFJ/Hy-Gain for $38 USD. If I had the money I would install a Bencher Skyhawk (no traps) or if I win the lottery a StepIR! I am lucky that the traps failed on one of the driven elements and I can access those from the top of the tower without taking down the whole antenna. It will still be lot of work to take down the elements, install the new traps and re-install them.
Today I was trying to contact TX5K, and I discovered that the whole antenna system had high SWR. I found that the main feed-line barrel connector on the grounding box outside the shack had arced over and the plastic insulation completely melted. It must have been the high voltages created by the high SWR conditions during the contest which caused this connection to fail. I replaced temporarily the connection and got back on the air but I must check the entire HF feed system.

Re:ARRL DX SSB 2013 - 2013/03/09 21:30HI I switched many years (18 yrs) to Mosley PRO, the swr stayed as the first day. If we compared the trap size from others they are 3 to 4 times larger with minimum inductance. The specs is 5 kw SSB. Difficult to say how good a StepIR antenna after +10 years will look like. It is important to buy the extra TX transmit proof and the lightning circuit protection. Both antennas are HD for wind load and ice. For the cost quality ratio Hygain has a good reputation.
About ARRL dx SSB, yes I was able to log in many multipliers during my last run on 20m with ZL, GD, TF, 4X, PJ2,4. I gave-up for TX5K is ratio was 1 qso/min due to QRM. That did the difference.
I was able after the contest to work TX5K on all 9 bands multi mode in less than 24 hrs on Monday (04).
We always get a surprise during a run mode, on my side almost everyone was 100w with 5,3,2w QRP QSO, s-meter gave S-9 as signal background for many hours. Good thing that I practiced 3x times on 40m before the contest by calling cq-dx. Otherwise we can froze by lost decision.
Cluster spotted me wrong with ve2F !! I had to give my call after every confirmation when suddendly many dupe call in a row from kw station.
