Re:CQ WW SSB 2015 - 2015/10/26 12:12 Congrats Victor,

Yes it is an other piece of job to make it 100% operational on phone... but when you do it you will break records.

Re:CQ WW SSB 2015 - 2015/10/26 14:14 Yes Victor

Murphy hit us on 80. Problems with the antenna forced us to stay 40 etc.. Next year will be another setup for 80 at least. Yes SSB tests are a pain on the ears, but for some reason, I'm not against trying it from time to time, diversifying the hobby.

Of course, CW still my thing.

I just arrived at work after leaving Sept-Îles at 6 am. But we had a blast, great friendship etc. Like many others, we got India, Indonesia, China, etc.. Japan all day long sunday was quite cool.

We were at school this year, like the russians () in 1972 said they came to Canada "to learn hockey" almost beating us...

Excellent foundations for a good team.

Gettin called by a ZL is just a treat.

More later.

Hello Victor,

Congratulation for your SSB effort really just outstanding.

I worked almost all pacific stations up to V73D, was missing JA on 10m

Heard you calling the JA on 10m with perseverance !

Family matters kept me from using all the 10M opening, so it was 100% S/P

Re:CQ WW SSB 2015 - 2015/10/26 22:24 A big congratulations to you Victor for your outstanding effort!!
WOW what a nice score for a single-op.

Also nice job Jean-Pierre on VB2T!
I heard you guys on 40m but you were very weak and were busy with Europe. I got my zone 2 with a VO2 station who called me.

I agree with you Gilles; I also had many problems with VA2 callsign. Many folks automatically expect VE2 and I had to slow down many times to correct my call on the weak signals. I just kept thinking of the many little-used VE2 two-letter calls which are out there.

This is the first time in a long time I operate single-op and I was not used to staying awake for so long!
I had a special event to attend to on Saturday evening so I lost many hours there.
The propagation was better than I expected especially after the last few weeks.

Re:CQ WW SSB 2015 - 2015/10/27 09:53 Congratulations to all the GCQ gang specially to Victor in HP and Gilles in Unassisted LP. Jean-Guy VE2BWL saluted me when I worked him as TO1E.

Regarding the problem of code, I always use VE2EBK even if I also VA2BK. Anyway, with any I have problems.

In SSB, with VE2EBK, I always pay attention if one has copied the E in EBK. Often comes back to me with TBK, RBK, BBK. In CW, many forget the E at the beginning or K at the end or simply copy VE2EDK.

When the public log are available, I will always check what has been copied. VE2EB in Rimouski has a good collection of my QSL with the bad call.

Welcome to the group !

Re:CQ WW SSB 2015 - 2015/10/28 10:17 Thank you guys for congratulations! I hope that was just some preliminary result since I have a lot of things to be improved.

I think the VE - VA misleading that's mostly CW issue. In SSB it doesn't matter. Even VB2 special call sounds good in SSB while that would be a nightmare in CW. I've learned one thing - any callsign good if it sounds loud and clear. In the contest many stations have screwed up signals by over pumping, over compressing and narrowed down to 1 khz ))) So some calls need to be repeated few times to be received correctly. I kept my SSB settings wide enough with  a bandwidth about 2.7 kHz and clear so I didn't have VE2-VA2 issues. Few times I had my call has been received as VA3WA for the first time so I had to repeat it few more times. But that's another story.))

I was using a new Heil Pro 7 headset. I've found the Pro 7 microphone produced the best SSB quality I've ever had. The down side it's very heavy and puts a big pressure on my head. I tried to straighten it out and got broken a metal pate holding earphones very soon in the beginning of the contest.  So I used an electric tape to fix them somehow. That was looking ugly but I've got very light and comfort pressure I need. )))

Victor

Re:CQ WW SSB 2015 - 2015/10/28 18:45 Victor,

I do not know how the Pro Set 7 is packaged, but if it is like the Pro Set 6, it comes with a dust protector around each headset (a sort of piece of clothe with a rubber band inside to maintain it around. Some people (like I was in the past) do not know that those pieces of clothe have to be removed for a good use of the headphones. If you use the headphones without the dust protector removed that put a big pressure on the ears because the ears cannot enter inside the headphones. When they are removed the ear fits fully inside protected all around by a smooth piece of rubber and they are perfectly comfortable for 48 hours. Additionally the audio is optimal that way otherwise it sounds loud because the ear is too far from the speaker and absorbed by the piece of clothe.
