Part time participation. The main target was a new 160m antenna testing. I was using 100w during the first night ( The longest QSO was with UW2M !!). The second night 1.5 kw (precisely )) ).

Looks like it's significantly over performs the temporary old one. Thanks for the QSO's to local guys: Gilles, VA2EW and Guy, VE2BWL.

The longest QSO was with RT6A. Heard very well LU8DPM which could be the best ODX. Didn't really call him to give other guys a chance to work him, I have a QSO with him in LOTW already.

Re:ARRL 160 2017 - 2017/12/03 20:38 Hi everybody,
On my side like Victor I had again commitments : A lot of family at home, so forget the serious effort. I only worked 8 hours and made a piece of run with the grandson (18 months) on the knees I even used his fingers to press the F1 or + keys to start his initiation. I expect it is not considered as multi-op ...
The propagation was great to Europe many stations called me very strong, even stronger than US ones.
Supervising the DX at the same time, at 23H30 UTC I worked two VU stations on 80m, one having only 100W, the first time I can ear them on 80m that winter. As I never received my QSL from VU2PTT, I expect that time that one of them will be LoTW.
On the other hand I worked from 6 to 7.40 local Sunday morning expecting to make some contacts with Asia/Pacific: Nothing in spite of a K=0.

Class: SO Unlimited HP
QTH: QC
Operating Time (hrs): 08h00

Summary:
Total:  QSOs = 858  Sections = 72  Countries = 39  Total Score = 227,584

Thanks to Gilles VA2EW and VE2BWL for the qsos. 2 firsts for me. New IC-7300 (works great in CW and with N1MM+ Spectrum Display. Also new inverted-L with at least 40 ft of vertical section. 2 elevated verticals. Only 100W until I buy a good amp with 160m and when I can afford it hi! I managed to work 2 EU stations.

Victor, what is your new 160m antenna and which receive antenna do you use for hearing well those russian stations? Which amplifier do you use for 1.5 KW. I remember you had an AL-80 in the past.

Re:ARRL 160 2017 - 2017/12/05 09:35 Hi Luc,

Congratulations with your ARRL-160 participation! Welcome to TOP band-ers club )) It's very exiting band requiring some special technique and equipment.

I'm testing a new version of Inverted-L at my contest position. It uses 73' tower as a part of the antenna. I use Alpha 89 to get a legal limit power output since top band needs high power for efficient DX communication. For good receiving it requires receiving antennas with some directivity because DX signals usually are very week and local noise overkills them. I use short BEVs for DX and K9AY for NA/SA.

The Russian station R7AB has 8 full size verticals as 160m radiation antenna. They have two times by 3 verticals phased to NA direction. As I believe they use power amplifier significantly higher 1.5 kw.)))  So they were coming 599 and they've been louder many NA stations)) UW2M also has a very efficient setup. I received UW2M with rst 589. So working them even with LP is not a big deal since they have a very comprehensive receiving antenna systems - phased long BEVs for every 30-deg ))))

Good luck with your 160m activity. There are two more exiting contests coming up soon - Stew Perry ( Dec 30/31) and CQ WW 160 on January.

Re:ARRL 160 2017 - 2017/12/05 12:27 It's not the first time I participate but it's my best effort this time. I'm not that new in the top band, For working good DX on 160m quite "easily", I used in the last year the JT65 mode and now FT8 due to JT65 not present anymore on 160m and it's really quicker to make a qso in FT8. You'd be surprised how far you can be heard with a modest transmit antenna and 100W.

I'm at 54 entities confiirmed on 160m and I worked KH, KL and even ZS and HZ. And this year, even if the conditions are less good to date than last year, I've been heard once in VK land and I heard several ZL and VK but only in october. I'm active on 160m FT8 most evenings and even some late nights and mornings and I transmit often CQ so I know where I'm heard with pskreporter and hamspots. I saw last February an exceptional opening with Hawaii when I was heard there really strong, I had to work that station really quick as those opening on 160m last about 15 minutes or less. I worked also Alaska with the same rare opening to that area but with weak signals on both sides as the aurora really breaks propagation there on 160m most of the times. Now that the easy ones are worked, I need a 160m capable amp to able tp reach one day that 9BDXCC.

Re:ARRL 160 2017 - 2017/12/05 19:59 Luc,

That's great! I've made few QSO's on 160/80 in JT65. Worked few EUs,LU/PY by just 100 watts. But the thing is a new DXCC on 160 doesn't come very often. Even with my modest 160m DXCC ( just 173). So usually I wait for some DX-peditions having good setup on 160 or other occasions like a 160m contest.

Anyway try to use some 600-700 watts or more amplifier and a receiving antenna. You coud finish your 160m DXCC just before the next springtime.

Good luck es 73!

Re:ARRL 160 2017 - 2017/12/17 08:31 Hi Luc,

I remembrer to have copied your signal several times on 160m last winter.  I am ofter listenng on FT8 in 40/80 at night.  I did the same with 160 a little bit this year but, so far, I only get US stations.

Re:ARRL 160 2017 - 2017/12/20 20:16 Hi Martin,

Just listen to 160m tonight and in that time of the year. I worked Argentina at the second night I heard it. He copied me at -7 which is a pretty good signal for that 11100 km+. My best distance is with a ZS station last year and best distance one way one time is the VK. So please join the club, you won't be disappointed!
