ARRL September VHF qso party - 2007/08/28 13:57ARRL September VHf QSO party

Bonne chance d avance!Jean-Pierre VA2SG - VE2SSS

Re:ARRL September VHF qso party - 2007/09/07 09:59Bonjour,
I'm planing to climb on a mountain nearby and to work on 50/144 from portable conditions on Sunday Sept 9. I try to get on the the top of Rougemont. I have 7 meter portable mast, 3 el on 50 and probably 3 el on 144. I will be using IC-746 and my car battery as a power supply. So it could run out up to 100w. The grid will be FN35.
I'll be preparing 3 el. yagi or 2 el.Moxon on Saturday but if someone has any 144 beam to borrow it would be nice.
Actually I have purchased 9 el. 144 MHz Mosley beam (2 wL) but it's still in Ontario and will be delivered only on next week.

Victor, I hope you get some good QSO up stair on 144 Mhz.....Let me know your result soon.

Re:ARRL September VHF qso party - 2007/09/10 15:37Bonjour Daniel!
I was operating from a field about 80 kms S-E from Montreal. (near Grandby). The exact grid square is FN35pi. It's a hill about 250-270 mtrs high.
Rig: Icom IC-746 and 13.8V battery as a power supply with output power 100w or less.
Antennas: 6m Cushcraft 3 el. yagi, 2m - 6 el. yagi, 2.2 mtrs boom length, home made (thanks to VE7BQH software) 9.4dBd gain, F/B 30 dB. I did it last Saturday from shank of a shovel.
All antennas had being mounted on 7 mtrs mast with a handle for manual rotation.
I used my car as a shack cause it was a bit rainy that day. Everything was perfect except local farmer's cows attack ) But I survived! I was really impressed by tropo propagation to south :W2 (NY, NJ, PA). I did some conacts more then 500 kms far from me. Totally operational time is 7 hours. I lost few hours by climbing on the top of Rougemont before. But it was unsuccessful cause before the top I found the road wasn't good for my car.

Claude,
You need directional antenna to hear weak VHF-UHF DX signals. So you get "peace of mind" just only when starting from 4 el. or more yagi. Since 4 el. the most important for gain parameter is a boom length. An elements number parameter can improve antenna directional characteristics (F/B, wide/narrow bandwidth etc.) . So to compare different antennas it's much correct to use boom length in wave numbers. For example for 144 mHz - yagi with a 2 meters boom is 1wL 6 meters - 3 wL etc.
Actually in EU-Russia we were using 4-5 wL antennas stacked to 2, 4 , 6 and more antennas array. So the EU tropo DX record is 4048 kms!! (D4-DL).
BTW I was calling to Quebec sity side a lot on 50/144. Nobody answered.

I also heard W3SO/FN00 up to s5-s7!!! I called but.. Looks like they didn't have a receiver at all )))

Re:ARRL September VHF qso party - 2007/09/10 18:57I dont think I have the QTH to work lot of VHF. But I would like to experiment /P from mountain tops around here. A nice site is Mt-Rédemption not far from Mt-Joli. It's a communication site of course. Roads are okay and for sure could reach Quebec city from there, maybe more on SSB/CW with 100w.
Will try to find or make a portable antenna. Will advise for test when QRV.

Re:ARRL September VHF qso party - 2007/09/11 03:19Bonjour tout le monde
Victor, most of the time, this kind of ham got 1Kw ouput , like I said, "big mouth, no ear". Anyway, condition this week end was not so good at all.

Me ferai quelque chose du genre.
