Re:CQ WW 160m CW 2013 - 2013/01/24 21:32 Hi Victor

WX will be fine without any snow or rain. I still have my noise problem for 160-80m bands. If the A-K index are good I will participate few hours both days.
My RX antenna + preamp are a must. Best contest to check your receiver performance with hundred of signals in 70 khz bandwidth.

40A1 showed-up last week for testing and on my RX ant he was S-8 & +5db on TX

I will look for you to give you some points.
I will be SOA, HP

Merci Rejean!

I'm going to my new position near Drumondville. So please turn your antenna to that direction instead of old one to Bucherville (ha-ha-ha). I hope to finish my big vertical installation and to put one beverage to EU in a bush nearby.

Let's do a club competition effort in the Contest. So we (you, me and Gilles , I'm pretty sure he will be on in the contest) could put the CGQ team on a noticeable position. May be we'll see other CGQ guys. I remember Louis, VE2EZD used one of his antennas for 160m.

CU and GL in the Contest!

Re:CQ WW 160m CW 2013 - 2013/01/25 11:10 Yes Victor, I will participate.

Conditions should be very good with a very low K index.

My Hydro sparking problem is not solved,  currently it seems silent and I hope it will stay like that.
On 160m with very low signals our VA2EW and VA2WA callsigns are very close and could be confused by operators guessing when using N+1 or check partial. I hope that nobody will spot one of us with the callsign of the other

Enjoy your new installation Victor and good luck to all of you who are participating

Thanks for the QSOs to VE2FK, VA2EW, VA2AM, VE2OJ, VE2AWR, VA2EU! That was first contest experience from the new location in a small village near Drummondville. That was a nice try but I didn't get full time participation. I took a day off on Friday and began a vertical installation at noon. Got it installed only around 19:30 local time. So I missed 2.5 hours in the very beginning. After 6 hours of hard work outside (the temp was -16-18C ) I got tiered and felt to sleep at 4:30 in the first day and right after 1:00 on the second ))) . I need to remove few treas to make a space for the vertical. My lot is very wooded by toll trees. The first day installation was not complete because top loaded wires got hanged on a nearest trees. So I left it temporarily for the first night and put the vertical down and re-install it on the next day. As you see I have almost 10 hours missed. So I consider that as a part-time testing participation.

Unfortunately DX propagation was not good. Later I check up from my Android phone the Solar-Terrestrial Data from the CGQ site and found there were 2 high latitude magnetic storms right on the best time for EU window on Friday and Saturday nights. So I can't evaluate the new set up ((( Anyway that's obviously a big improvement comparing to the set up I have at home. The air is amazing there!! The 160 m band noise is the only around 2-3 S-units without Attenuation! I can hear well on my vertical many EU stations CQ-ing in a row right under NA stations! So I decided not to spend time on a 300 meters BV antenna installation because I could hear better compare to EU stations didn't hear well my "modest" 1.3 kW signal! I can imaging how many kW's they pushed to theirs antennas!

The best DX was ZS6EZ who called me with a signal as local NA. Found all states except ND. I have also missed VE5 and as usual VY0-VE8.

Re:CQ WW 160m CW 2013 - 2013/01/27 20:20 Hi everyone

Victor conditions were very poor if I just compared test signals from Europe 1 week ago they were down by 18-25 db below normal. Your score is very good, they were some black out by erea. Almost nothing from Caribbean region. Your location will give you many multi for the cw-ssb contest.

Seen my local noise not yet fixed costs me another +6-10db I played a lot with my FTdx5000D with DNR, APF, VRF to copy below my noise floor. Many frustration when I couldn't work dx with a fair signal. This was the same situation for many strong east coast stations. The A-index went from 6 to 18 on Friday night (local) it was back to 6 Sunday afternoon!!.
For top band the A-index is very important, when it gets 0 to 2 this is like to gain +10db. Operator time: 9-10 hours

Comments:

Incredible, the K was very good for days and just for the contest we have had a high K event. Except the 3 first hours when the whole continental USA had great signals, very difficult conditions with some short openings to Europe. When open, the signals were very strong, a sort of binary gate. The second night had a few great hours to Europe.

Here at Montreal I was really able to feel in real time the perturbations of the  ionosphere and the fast changing conditions: crystal clear strong signals succeeding to high absorption, sudden openings to a small area of USA moving  a few seconds later to Europe etc...

I do not believe that this year will be a big vintage in the history of the CQWW 160.

By the way I think that there were less DX participants and this is my worst score in term of countries, usually I work between 60 and 70 countries.

Victor, I think that this spring you will have better condtions to complete your installation. Just do not wait too long when the snow has smelt, it is far easier to install antennas when the leaves are not already grown and when you can see the branches.

Thanks to all the CGQ members who called me.
