Re:Nouveau Membre - 2010/09/05 22:36
Hi all,
It was my pleasure to meet many of CGQ members during now to be annual BBQ party. That afternoon was just too much fun and seemed too short.
I learned a lot, for example a new call modifier /BBQ, and that the only thing needed for digital modes is a mike, ssb transmitter, and a right operator. Actually too many things to enumerate here. During the mini contest, I observed how the future winner judiciously picked time when most contestants where just back home from their XYL shopping. Unfortunately by the time I went on the air, they all decided it was time for supper (spare about 7)..
It was also a great way to meet some of the most brilliant contestants and radio operators in Quebec. Thank you Victor for inviting me.
My interest in HF radio begun when I was in grade 8 or 9 high school, and I started with building direct conversion receiver for 10m band (from scratch), and later a 160m band receiver from a parts kit. To put up a half descent antenna (or so I thought), I had to pick a lock to my high-rise building attic doors, and do all antenna installation (sort of long wire hi hi) at night ... o boy. Got SWL number... The city noise on 160m was just insane with that antenna. And if that was not enough, there was a lighting pole nearby, that would go on and off periodically, and when that thing would go off, there was tremendous amount of broadband noise generated all over 160m..
Then my university years were far from home, so there was some time on SSB at university club station, but too little time to be serious about it.
And about a year ago, I got my basic plus and very first own callsign va2tta, with interest in low band and CW. Just love that CW sound.
As Victor mentioned, I like chasing DX on the low band, but not too active on contest side. I just feel I need a lot more knowledge starting with CW, antennas, band propagation, . and list goes on... to begin with, and also my station is in its infancy as my skills really. I find myself half the time without an antenna to transmit.. either because I am trying to make it better, or I just screwed up and bent it, etc.
Thank you for the welcoming words, my 73s to everyone, and health for many many years so you can enjoy what you're doing!
