Clean Sweep Gets More Difficult in November Sweepstakes as RAC Splits Ontario Into Four Sections
By Jamie Dupree NS3T radio-sport.net Posted August 8, 2012
Change is in the air for the venerable November Sweepstakes contest run by the American Radio Relay League, as the Ontario section in Canada is being divided into four different sections, meaning contesters will now need 83 sections to achieve a "clean sweep" of those multipliers.
"A major change is in store for 2012," reads the 2012 Sweepstakes Overview now on the web site of the ARRL.
"Because of an administrative change at the Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC), the Ontario Section has been split into four new sections: Ontario North (ONN), Ontario South (ONS), Ontario East (ONE) and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)," the ARRL explained.
That obviously means a change in the total multipliers for the Sweepstakes weekend.
"With the elimination of the Ontario Section and the addition of these four new Sections, the total number of Sections required for a Clean Sweep has increased from 80 to 83 (80 -1 +4 = 83)" the ARRL reported.
The last section change came 12 years ago in 2000, when the West Central Florida section was added, raising the multiplier total to 80.
Other changes have included adding Newfoundland/Labrador (1997), Northern New York (1996), Western Washington (1989), splitting Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands into separate mults (1988) and adding West Texas (1987).
Now the VE3 prefix will take more than just a quick "ON" in your log when it comes to the mult - especially with the possible confusion surrounding ONN, ONS and ONE.
"The ARRL has recognized the change and they will be effective for the 2012 NOVEMBER SWEEPSTAKES," the ARRL notice reads, urging contesters to update their contest computer programs before November.
"Be sure to check/update your logging software to be sure whatever you are using recognizes these new multipliers."
The change is also certain to mean new records could be set in almost every category in this year's ARRL SS CW and SSB contests - as three extra multipliers could certainly boost the scores above the marks now on the books.
