ARRL 160 CW 2013 - 2013/12/08 11:43 Bonjour/Hi,

My results:

   CallSign Used : VA2WA

Operator Category : SINGLE-OP
            Band : ALL
           Power : HIGH

Band    QSOs    Pts  Sec + DXCC
        1.8    1003    2324  110
      Total    1003    2324  110

           Score : 255,640

Total Time On 22:14  (1334 mins)

Best DX: T32RC, CE1/K7CA and RA4LW. There were not many stations especially outside US/CA. So the contest was really boring. First day conditions were good. Some EU were booming here. Second night was the worst. The Aurora has screwed up all the propagation. I have improved my vertical. Anyway still 5-6 dB behind Gilles ))) I guess few dbs could explain my lower power (just 1.3 kW). Anyway there are a lot of thing to improve. I hope CQ WW 160 in next January will not be so boring.

Heard Gilles, VA2EW running hard, Rejean, VA2AM doing S&P, Claude, VE2FK monitoring activity and other VE2/VA2 guys.

Thanks a lot for all the QSOs ))

73!

Victor

Comments:

Certainly,  the most pleasant  ARRL 160 that I have worked.  Not at the
propagation level of 2009 but fairly good conditions if we except the Magnetic
storm  during the second night.
Good signals from Europe, strangely not so good from California, I am even
missing two CA sections.
On the station side, everything worked perfectly and at least, it looks like
Hydro had solved my last year arcing complain, for the first ever  I had not
noticed  any arcing noise for the whole contest .

I have tried a new S&P/Run strategy that should provide  slightly less
multipliers but more Q's. We will see against the results (last year I was #10 SOHP)if it was a good choice.
The current 3830 shows that my score is 78% of the TOP 4 mean compared to 71% last year with exactly the same TOP 4 guys. So we can already say that something had been improved. In any case it is very encouraging and I think that I have found a direction to dig for improving my score and I expect to even improve that for the next CQ 160m.

My best DX was VK2 and the guy was very patient

Congrats Victor fot the T32, I looked forward them all the contest but was not able to find them. Perhaps they called me but did not heard them.

Yes the 2sd night is always VERY boring as well for ARRL 160 and CQ 160. Everyone has already contacted everyone and it's hours of unanswered autoCQ with guys tired and furious of they precious run frequency. A good indication: my effective working time is 31 hours and WINTEST which calculate with the 10mn rules says 29H43. Then I got several periods of more than 10mn CQ without answer. The fact is that if you do not play this game you will miss about 100 Q's and 3 to 5 multipliers.
I think that both contests should be limited to 20 hours of operation which should oblige guys to more tactical choices.

Thanks to everyone for the calls, especially between 8 and 12 UTC...

Gilles VA2EW and VE2TZT

You had nice signal into Eastern QC.
Still no antenna here but one day.

Re:ARRL 160 CW 2013 - 2013/12/08 19:59 Yes the first night was much better  but I could only stay for few hours each night. Propagation was very difficult for the west coast only half of W6 section worked and I missed UT AK SD. For Canada nothing heard from MB and NT. I am still happy to work NV, CE and KH6 they are never easy against the USA pile-up with strong QSB. The stronget dx was DR1D +S-9.
I guess also the snow storm across many states did not help on Saturday.

I read that on 160m sometime the reflection direction can get skewed and on Saturday many signal from (w5-6) 200-260 degrees were louder on 330 degrees antenna...!
