That was a part time participation. The bands condition was not good enough for my setup. Also I did a lot of cleaning on my land in St.Zephirine. On Saturday afternoon Vlad, VA2TTA visited me for Stew Perry 160m contest. Actually there were not too many stations from Asia. Because of that I decided to finish 2 hours before end even a propagation on 15m was not bad.

Comments:

Interesting real time study of blackout conditions over North Pole versus NOAA
numbers.
For the records, my SPE 2KFA betrayed me Saturday at my best run moment on 15m when I was at 80/h for an hour.
I replaced it by my 15 years old Yaesu VL-1000, all that at the cost of a 45mn
interruption at the best time of the contest which obviously cost me 30 to 50
QSO's plus the added difficulty to work multipliers with a reduced power.

Perhaps the Italian amp did not appreciate that I worked Asian only...

More seriously, it looks like while the amplifier was used in normal conditions
(Power, SWR, temperature,...) a simple CMS decoupling capacitor on one of the
six 400W parallel amplifiers gave up vaporizing itself while short-circuiting
the PCB starting an internal fire of the board, enough to start the room fire
detector.
It also looks like my amplifier is one of the first build and now SPE has
changed the capacitors used on its boards.
That does not prevent me from being furious for the lack of reliability after
only 2.5 years and at minimum, if a known problem was existing with the
capacitors a letter to consumers could have been sent.

By the way after 15 years of service my VL1000 is still 100% operational and
never failed, I just had a fuse to change two years ago. Too bad that Yaesu
never really made the VL2000.

Thanks to all the Asian stations for their calls and VE2FU and VA2TTA for the spots

Re:ALL ASIAN DX CONTEST 2015 - 2015/06/22 23:33 Gilles,

I'm sorry with your PA damage. I've got through a transistor PA repair and would say it's so expensive and close to a new PA purchase. So I finally got a second legal limit PA on 2 x 3CX800 and I'm very happy with it, BTW one my friend has commented your signal on Saturday night on 20m was was really loud in the RA3 land )))

Re:ALL ASIAN DX CONTEST 2015 - 2015/06/23 09:15 Ouf! quelle déception Gilles.
J'espère qu'on saura corriger le problème à ta satisfaction.

Re:ALL ASIAN DX CONTEST 2015 - 2015/06/23 11:13 About the cost, it looks like only one 500$ board has to be changed. Actually, the PA is composed of 6 boards each handling 400W max. So you never have to change the whole PA.
In my case it is not even the transistor which is burned out on the board but the capacitor. The problem is that the board has been heated so hard by the short circuit that it must be changed.
I have not said my last word, the guy in Texas who is the NA support has to be paid for the job but I will ask to the Italian company to have the board free : The capacitor failure is a known problem from them and is unacceptable even out of guaranty.

Re:ALL ASIAN DX CONTEST 2015 - 2015/06/23 11:42 Gilles,

Lucky you. Looks like it is not so expensive as was in my case were one small issue burned out almost everything in ex-my Icom IC-PW1. So I've got a pause and still waiting for a new generation of LDMOS-FET's power amplifiers which ones should be even more reliable compare to PA with tubes.

BTW I just got an email from CQ WAZ card checker confirming that I've successfully accomplished WAZ 160m award ( 31 zones) !!! That would be one with a serial number 468. I guess this will be number 2 in QC?

Re:ALL ASIAN DX CONTEST 2015 - 2015/06/23 14:20 Congratulation Victor and welcome in this tiny 160 WAZ club ...

Yes, according to the at least weekly updated site :

http://www.cq-amateur-radio.com/cq_awards/cq_waz_awards/cq_waz_160_meters.html

You are the 2sd in QC to get that Award.

Re:ALL ASIAN DX CONTEST 2015 - 2015/06/23 14:41 Congratulation Victor for your award.

With S7-8 line noise on 160M and a small lot, my only chance to get this award is with MorseRunner

Re:ALL ASIAN DX CONTEST 2015 - 2015/06/23 18:59 Good news : After having sent an argued e-mail to the president of SPE in Italy, they have decided to take the repair under guaranty even if the date is over by 6 months.

I will not re-develop but that decision is re-assuring me on the seriousness of that company.

Re:ALL ASIAN DX CONTEST 2015 - 2015/06/24 23:04 Congrats Victor!

Gilles, good news they at least do that much for you, hope with different caps it will last a lot longer. But this is just 1 board, what about the rest of them, do they use the same caps? Do they replace all caps?
