We did not work the entire contest this time due to training the guest operators. The two rookie CW ops are getting better. I also had to investigate the cause of a small explosion from the back of the operating table while testing the antenna system under full power. There was no evidence of any damage or smoke , just a large bang which was quite scary. Everything was normal after; a big mystery...

The poor propagation wiped out 10m and also affected 15m which was behaving very strangely into EU. We also started too late on 80m and conditions were very tough at our location where atmospheric and line noise kept us from hearing well. 20m and 40m were the bands of choice but it was still chalenging to get DX contacts.
The new trapless antenna worked beyond expectations and it was worth the hard work and expense to replace it just one month ago. Nice to be fully QRV again!

The thing I prefer in this contest is the no error permission linked to the 24 hours format. If you miss an opening, no any second chance tomorrow, then one must be permanently aware of propagation on different bands and makes trades off.

In spite of QRN, I got a nice opening on 80 and was called by many HQ stations.
I also had a lot of fun at twilight when running EU on 20m at 150/h with so strong and separated in time signals that I was still able to work multipliers on 40m in SO2R on my N/E dipole.

The dark face was the endless waiting for 20m opening to EU at dawn when the whole NA was asleep and so few answers on 40m CW as well as SSB.

I finished the 15 last minutes running JA's on 20m.

Without my 2KFA I worked with the VL1000 perhaps I should had better tried LP.
I chose the assisted cat because without a serious high band antenna SO2R had been a waste of time (currently I use a 40m wire dipole for 15m and a 20m wire dipole).

I am well advanced on the construction of a arm for a second antenna on the tower and I was closed to ready to put the 3element SteppIR for that contest but I prefer to do a consistent job especially with the anti-rust preparation.
Then I am currently on the painting layers, after that will be the wiring job and only then I will put the antenna.
The idea Is to have something not permanent but easy to install just for the contests and of course it could be a different antenna according to a specific contest.

Re:IARU 2015 - 2015/07/13 22:13 Congratulations on your nice score Gilles!

I missed the dawn 20m EU opening because I had to get some sleep around 3 AM local time and I forgot to set the alarm to wake me at sunrise. i should have had that coffee! We also started too late on 80m but also had very bad QRN.
That's what you get when you have to accommodate the guests but we had great fun anyway.

I have restarted the "beverage in street" project which I hope to complete this summer without incidents.
