Re:ARRL 160 2017 - 2017/12/05 09:35
Hi Luc,
Congratulations with your ARRL-160 participation! Welcome to TOP band-ers club )) It's very exiting band requiring some special technique and equipment.
I'm testing a new version of Inverted-L at my contest position. It uses 73' tower as a part of the antenna. I use Alpha 89 to get a legal limit power output since top band needs high power for efficient DX communication. For good receiving it requires receiving antennas with some directivity because DX signals usually are very week and local noise overkills them. I use short BEVs for DX and K9AY for NA/SA.
The Russian station R7AB has 8 full size verticals as 160m radiation antenna. They have two times by 3 verticals phased to NA direction. As I believe they use power amplifier significantly higher 1.5 kw.))) So they were coming 599 and they've been louder many NA stations)) UW2M also has a very efficient setup. I received UW2M with rst 589. So working them even with LP is not a big deal since they have a very comprehensive receiving antenna systems - phased long BEVs for every 30-deg ))))
Good luck with your 160m activity. There are two more exiting contests coming up soon - Stew Perry ( Dec 30/31) and CQ WW 160 on January.
73!
